Interpretive Ethics Section
A good deal of the power of conservatism over the past decades has come from its claim to represent a moral orientation in politics. Yet the actions of conservative administrations can be shown to be profoundly immoral. The so-called religious right has actually trivialized what are otherwise, indeed, serious moral questions. This will be one theme in this section. Ethics is deliberation on what is right, real and good. Any general view of the world in philosophy or theology will have an implicit moral orientation. But in this section we focus specifically on ethical issues and questions. The essay Interpretive Ethics: The Right, The Real and The Good presents an introduction by Ed Knudson. This section also relates to the Smart Government Section of the website, at about the same level of abstraction. Policies are courses of action intended by institutions. Policies are always based on ethics whether realized or not. In the Governance Section we start from issues in the world. In this Ethics section we start from the moral intentions and consequences of issues, and especially focus on the policies, practices and teachings of agencies oriented to ethical reflection such as non-profit research centers, educational institutions, and religious organizations. Some beginning links for ethics include the following:
